Curatorial Statement
Chisinau by Night emerged from the real stories of the inhabitants of Chisinau. During the development of the performance, the actors spoke with people whose lives unfold in different parts of the city at night, and their experiences became material for stage monologues and situations. The performance runs for approximately two hours and is intended for audiences over the age of sixteen.
The characters include a taxi driver, nightclub workers, medical staff, a hotel receptionist, a member of the criminal underworld, a former addict, a shop assistant at a night store and a go-go dancer. Their stories are not connected by a single plot. Instead, they follow one another and gradually create an image of a city that exists alongside its daytime life.
Fusu does not attempt to turn these different experiences into a single story about Chisinau. Their diversity is precisely what remains at the centre of the performance. One person knows the city through driving, another through a hospital, another through a nightclub, another through the street. The city thus becomes the sum of the experiences of people who inhabit and use it in very different ways. The stage language is restrained and relies on changes in light, sound and space.
The performance does not attempt to offer a definitive portrait of the city. Its very structure reveals how many different experiences can exist under a single name.
About the Performance
Imagine the city of Chisinau as a living person leading a double life: the “normal” life that each of us knows, and the hidden one that begins to pulse after sunset.
The energy of the streets, the shadows of historic buildings, the brightly lit boulevards and pavements, and the mysterious atmosphere of the old neighbourhoods—all of this is created by us, the PEOPLE OF CHISINAU.
Chisinau by Night is a performance that surprises through its honesty. The actors guide us through an urban story, inviting us to explore the contrasts and complexities of human nature.
The text of the performance is inspired by the true stories of the city’s nocturnal inhabitants: a taxi driver lost in the night, a nostalgic cleaner working in a nightclub, a desperate MC, an AVIASAN surgeon, a receptionist at a luxury hotel, a romantic gangster, a drug addict who managed to save himself, a devoted obstetrician, a tough saleswoman working the night shift at a NonStop shop, a Go-Go dancer who finds herself in a dangerous situation, and a security guard with a sense of humour.
Each of them has a unique story and shares a deeply personal dialogue with the city.
