Vasilev is a Bulgarian theatre director and a performing arts manager with vast experience in the field of cultural policy and management. He holds MA degrees in theatre directing from The Kr. Sarafov National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts and in business management from D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics.
As a theatre director he has staged productions in many different theatres in Bulgaria, such as Tear and Laughter Theatre and Theatre 199 in Sofia; Ivan Radoev Drama and Puppet Theatre in Pleven; Sava Dobroplodni Drama and Puppet Theatre in Silistra, etc. Vasilev also has been invited to create productions at the National Theatre of Niš, Serbia and at the Anton Panov National Theater in Strumica, North Macedonia. Some of his productions include: Face by Aleksandar Galin, The Grönholm Method by Jordi Galceran, Seryozha Is Very Stupid by Dmitry Danilov, Don Juan by Molière.
In 2015 Vasilev was awarded Bronze Vityaz in Moscow for his performance Face by Aleksandar Galin, he received the directing awards of the 9th edition of The International Chamber Theater Festival, organized by the New European Theater Association (NETA) in 2019 for his performance Contract 2019 by Mike Bartlett and of the International Theatre Festival SKUPI, North Macedonia in 2025. He is a recipient of the international Special award at the 20th edition of the International Festival of Italian Playwriting Schegge d’Autore 2023, organized by Sindicatio Nazionale Autori Drammatici (SNAD).
Since 2006, he has been the director of the Drama Theatres in Lovech and Pleven (Bulgaria) for two consecutive terms, and has managed to turn them into active theatre institutes for the period bringing their work into an international context. In the period 2013-2014 he was Deputy Minister of Culture.
Since April 2022, Vasil Vasilev is the General Manager of Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia.
