A student from a small French town picks up a young Algerian from a Paris street and takes him to his apartment. Besides sex, they also experience some hints of love, but everything ends up with a smartphone theft, a rape, and the fact that reporting this rape to the family and the authorities is impossible… The autobiography of a young French writer Édouard Louis is arranged in the form of a puzzle by the renowned German director Thomas Ostermeier, who combines time perspectives and smaller narrative units, creating thus dramatic tension. The focus is not on the crime-erotic plot, but on various social evils which, although some of them might seem less visible, destroy civic society from the inside: provincial narrow-mindedness and intolerance, xenophobia, unprofessionalism and prejudices on the part of public services (healthcare and the police) … In this performance, Ostermeier seems to go back to his early, youthful phase, marked by contemporary topics, vehement acting, video-works, and live music.
